Four ways to be environmentally conscious

Modern-day consumers are smarter than ever before when it comes to understanding the environmental impact of our actions.

As big corporations tackle issues regarding the sustainability of the environment, a behavioural revolution is occurring on a grassroots level, seeing more and more every day Aussies taking matters into their own hands.

It’s important to be reminded, that we don’t have to make grand gestures to have an impact. In fact, below are four simple ways to be environmentally conscious that you can easily include in your everyday life.

Turn it off

If you haven’t been able to adopt renewable energy sources just yet, reducing your everyday energy consumption is a simple and effective way to work towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

Start by switching off appliances at the outlet to preserve energy. In turn, not only will you be lowering your energy bills, but also reducing carbon emission one switch at a time.

Reusable products

Melbourne, the most livable city renowned for its coffee culture, is constantly producing the best brews for coffee lovers. However, with this habit comes excessive landfill from single use cups.

Thankfully, the rise of reusable cups is on the rise and you too can adopt this action to ensure both you and the planet are taken care of.

Brands including Keep Cup, SoL and Frank Green are just a few that are providing consumers with eco-friendly alternatives that contribute to sustainable living.

Eliminate single use plastic

With the Australian Marine Conservation Society reporting eight tons of plastic waste ending up in our oceans every year, the trend to eliminate single use plastics has become a national revolution.

With big corporations such as supermarket chains Woolworths, Coles and Aldi eliminating single use plastic bags you too can do your bit by embracing durable canvas bags, produce bags and paper bags. After all, paper can play a critical role in transitioning away from plastic bags, packaging and straws.

Quick tip: Stuck trying to find an alternative to the single use plastic bin liner? Line your bin with old newspapers as the paper will break down a lot faster than plastic.

Recycle, recycle, recycle!

Everyday household items must be separated in terms of recyclables and general waste.

Household items containing metal packaging (aerosol cans, food and drink cans, pet food cans, etc), plastic packaging (drink bottles, shampoo and conditioner bottles, take away containers, etc), glass packaging (bottles, jars, etc) and paper packaging (cartons, cereal boxes, mail, etc) must be recycled to ensure less waste ending up in landfill.

Don’t forget to recycle your old technology including phones, computers, televisions as these can be used for parts to make newer models.

These four environmentally conscious actions are just some ways you can have significant, positive impact in the long term. Whether big or small, it is important to remember that these necessary actions will help the planet, hopefully creating a better place for our future.
